morning nation…

Breakfast……….. the most important meal of the day… the energy power meal to kick start the human system (not to mention the religious must have cup of coffee to avoid that cranky feeling).

I really think that not many places other than Singapore offers such a variety of breakfast meals. From the coffee shops to markets, to hawker centres, to cafes, to hotel buffets, to fast-food breakfast, to train station food stalls… and each one in all the different parts of the island has something great to offer (variety wise) OK lets do a count from memory…

  • Chinese breakfast (this covers all your noodles, congee, fried stuff, braised stuff etc etc..)
  • Malay Breakfast ( traditional cakes and sweeter things, rice (yes you heard me rice!) noodles again etc etc)
  • Indian Breakfast (pratha, dosay, sweet rice noodles with brown sugar and coconut (sorry cant spell it – sounds like – poot-thu-mar-yam)
  • Vegetarian Breakfast – (mostly this would be the Chinese – usually they make it a point to have it on certain auspicious days of the Lunar Calendar, more of a Taoism or Buddhism respect)
  • Continental Breakfast- (OK wont waste time here, think of your Starbucks and hotel buffets, along those lines.
  • Fast Food Breakfast – (yes, i found it weird when i was overseas that some MacDonald’s did not serve breakfast. Most of the leading fast-food labels in Singapore serves breakfast)

And many many more which i cant think of now… these varieties is only from memory.. so could you imagine if an actual research was done?? hahaaa…. so now you get the title of this post dontch-ya!

But the most Singaporean of them all, beating everyone hands down would be the traditional Kaya Toast with eggs and coffee!!! You cannot get more Singaporean than that! This energy packed set is served throughout the nation at every coffee shop be it in the neighbourhood or in the business district.

For a reasonable amount you have your Carbs, proteins, energy and caffeine mix for the day!!! the Singaporean power drive! One of the more well know ones would be Killiney Road Kaya Toast, where the soft boiled eggs are perfect! coffee strong but not over, and fragrant toasted bread slice with a sweet egg jam (kaya) with a knob of chilled butter slice.

Catch them during the peak periods to ensure that every toast is done to perfection and make sure you have it before the butter melts. contrast in temperature, texture and flavours! all in one bite! enjoy!!
