Whatever It Was, It Was Good !

When my mate Desmond & I were making our way to get my new Manfrotto tripod (with a junior geared head .. of course! :) ) from Peninsula Plaza and we were cogitating as to what could offer to fill us up for lunch with the same area. We knew we were hungry & we knew we wanted to try something different however we were not too sure what. He then remembered, a colleague of his was talking about some great Myanmar restaurant in the same building where the camera shop was. I have yet to even sample dishes from Myanmar yet alone great ones! So Myanmar for lunch it was!

After walking round the building trying to locate this (at that point in time seemed mysterious) restaurant, we finally were at the doorstep of a (we were not really sure if it was THE ONE, but judgment was overcome by hunger) Myanmar restaurant which did say authentic Myanmar cuisine. so we went in, sat and got the menu. We then decided to seek the help of the staff who were friendly enough to assist us. And after some recommendations we ordered.

It is really interesting as I ignorantly always thought that it would have been very similar to Thai food … well yes and no. We had the Fermented Tea Leaf Salad, a pork curry, deep fried eel, a Burmese rice noodle soup and of course rice.

I must say the fermented tea leaf salad was really the cracker from the whole lunch. It was sweet savory with a small hint of citrus. Every now and then you get the crunch from the fried chickpeas. Simply amazing. You cannot really make out what was in the salad as it really was all mixed in to what looked to me was green curry paste (but of course it was not). Sometimes one should not ask so much and just enjoy! Whatever it was, it was good !

The pork curry was good, however as i mentioned earlier, silly me was expecting something spicy. When it arrived with it’s robust chili red I did think it was going to be spicy but it was not. Very flavorful. Kind of like Peranakan curry meets Rendang ?? If this makes any sense at all . Whatever it was, it was good !

The Fried Eel however was kind of weird for us. Maybe it was because it was so fried that it did not taste anything like fish. And it did come with heaps of fried shallots (which I simply do not mind). Then I discovered that taking a huge spoon of the fried eel and dumping it into the soup was indeed yummylistic!!! Whatever it was, it was good !

The rice noodle soup, Mohinga. The rice noodle (like vermicelli) was silky smooth, mmMMMMmm …. and the soup was simply delicious!!! It was like mee siam meets soto ayam to me but Desmond had other thoughts. Whatever it was it was good !

By then we were already too stuffed to even think of desserts (gives me an excuse to return!! ), very reasonably priced, the staff really is friendly and the food is good. Now what more can you ask for in a lunch. Whatever it was, it was good !

Happy Fooding !!!

  1. Burmese food is complex, flavourful and very different to anything else in Asia. I grew up eating the Burmese staple Khow Sway which is served here in many different versions. This is one of my favourite little restaurants.

  2. You said it Anita! One of the many little gems in the city!
